Dee and I finally managed to “do the Jacobite” – take the steam train from Fort William to Mallaig. We know the area well from regular trips by car so seeing familiar sights from a different perspective was fabulous. The autumnal colours were spectacular – and the drizzly weather added to the atmosphere as there was quite a bit of inverted cloud hanging around in the trees. Initially the only empty seats were across from Dee and I so we spread into the available space. We had to regroup when a couple got on at Glenfinnan. They had missed the train and drove fast from Fort William to catch the train up. Going across the Glenfinnan viaduct is amazing – just like in Harry Potter! Our fellow traveller-adventurers came from all over the world! It was a bit daunting going through the tunnels and seeing smoke come in through the air vents (and windows until we quickly closed them!). Dee treated us to a delicious lunch in Mallaig. We bought wrote and posted a couple of post cards and then it was time for the return journey. Wow. A day we’ll remember all our lives. One of the great railway journeys of the world.
