Sunday 2nd October 2011: Beinn Eighe

Beinne Eighe forms a long ridge with many spurs and summits, two of which are classified as Munros. I would also come down through the Corie Mhic Fhearchair, simply known (and more easily pronounced) as the “Triple Buttress Corrie” after the three large rock features which dominate the view from the north.
There are many mountains I am happy to tackle on my own. There are others I want experienced company on: Beinne Eighe is such a mountain. So when the Torridon Walking Festival offered a guided walk I was champing at the bit to go.
While there were about 25 people doing the walk, we were divided into small groups each with a guide and setting off about 15 minute intervals.
The views were spectacular and the banter welcome. It felt as much as a wildlife safari with eerie sounding stags baying during rutting, ptarmigan dotterels and two golden eagles making their appearances.
There was some scrambling to the summits and the most adrenaline inducing part was going down “the shute” – a very very very steep and eroded, red scree path.
Fantastic. Back at the car the ginger beer was delightful. My shower, wine and dinner went down a treat too.
