


As the Waverley Paddle steamer was meant to be calling at Mallaig to cruise up Loch Nevis mum and I drove out to join it. 1530 hours came and went with o sign of the steamer: it was running an hour late and then next news we got: the trip was cancelled.
Still the drive to Mallaig itself is magnificent through some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere in the world. We passed the glenfinnan viaduct where Harry Potter is often spotted, the white sands of Morar and Arisaig, Camusdarroch Beach where parts of Local Hero was filmed, and the Prince’s Cairn where Bonnie Prince Charlie fled to France after the Battle of Culloden.
