Friday 27th August 2010: Gairich

Having checked that Meg and I would not be caught up in deer stalking we had an early start to Loch Quoich Dam. First challenge was getting across the dam as the gate was locked. I could climb but how to get Meg over.
I investigated the river further down: in spate and too strong for me. Just then I spotted a Scottish Hydro landrover and flagged the driver down. Am I allowed to use this path? Yes, just climb over the gate. I can manage that but my dog can’t. OK, I’ll open it for you – need to keep it locked because of vandalism. Great. Thanks – how do we get back over? And the driver showed me another route over the dam.
It’s very clear to see the day’s impressive looking and isolated objective across the dam. A good if rather boggy in places stalkers’ path zigzags up the slopes. There’s a wee bit of scrambling to do and then you’re on to the vast plateau. What a viewpoint over Loch Quoich and the Knoydart mountains.
