Wednesday 12th August 2009: Whirlwind tour of Iona and Mull

Friend J came through from Edinburgh for a couple of nights and we got up at the crack of dawn for the very early ferry to Craignure: delightful crossing with guillemots gannets and geese galore.
We drove across loch strewn moorland to Fionnphort and the foot ferry to Iona. Before heading for the Abbey and John Smith’s grave, we ambled through the remnants of the 13th century nunnery.
We then took the scenic route up to Calgary: one of those drives of a lifetime where turning each corner brings something even more beautiful into view, until we eventually arrived at Calgary Beach: white sands perfect for some very late lunch.
On round to Tobermory via Kilmore church – featuring a tall slim Irish style tower. In Balamory we bumped into one of the local dykes: caught her quite unawares and left her speechless!
I’d been on Mull once before – again for a day trip – and now I’ll need to take up offers to stay for longer to explore further, climb it’s only Munro and chill out.
Fabulous day rounded off with an Italian meal in Oban. Bellisimo
