It’s wonderful having a boss who is flexible and willing to sign leave out at the last minute in support of the vagaries of mountain weather forecasts.
When I checked with my brother if there would be anything to spook me on the Grey Corries ridge walk his reply was “only the beauty of the views”! And he was right: a classic ridge walk. The rocky terrain of quartzite scree gives the range their name.
It’s a long walk in to Stob Ban (which I added on to the ridge walk) but the views are breathtakingly beautiful over Ben Nevis, The Aonachs, the Easains and the Mamores – and every other mountain as far as the eye could see. In walking for 20+km I spoke to only two people: one I woke up when I went into the Bothy near the base of Stob Ban, and the other I caught up as I descended from the Stob Coire Easain. Otherwise it was gentle quiet punctuated with curlew, cuckoo and lambs.
