Sunday 16th November 2008: Happy 100th

For years the Ballahulish horseshoe (Beinn a Bheithir) has waved to me as I near Ballahulish, and for years I’ve been in awe of the mountain. I’ve always made the excuse of wanting a perfect day to climb it. Today was that perfect day!
The ridge has two Munros which were my 99th and 100th!
The first of the two Munros Sgorr Dhonuill really tested my metal taking out of my comfort zone! A real adrenaline raiser: very steep scree path on to the ridge and down the other side: a step scramble down frosted boulders – which just happened to be on a narrow ridge – down to the bealach. Yikes.
The views made it all worthwhile: dominated by mountains: Glen Coe, Ben Nevis, Mamores, Morvern Hills, Papas of Jura and Mull.
Getting off the mountain was initially straightforward: follow an old fence down to the start of the conifer plantations. But then where? Too late I read a description of the old path (which I found and came down) as a steep muddy horror.
