Sunday 7th September 2008: A long held ambition: Buchaille Etive Mor

Buchaille Etvie Mor is one of the most beautiful mountains in Scotland. In the UK. Infact in the world. Iconic. And has been high on my list for a long time and I had two parameters within which I was working: I wanted a really good day for the walk as I wanted to see the views and I definitely wanted to do this one with friends.
The climb is straightforward if strenuous! And dramatic. It looks like you are climbing a steep and craggy pyramid. Yet the route we chose is described as the tourist path!
As the path is so steep we gained height remarkably quickly and soon our cars (which remained in view for just about the whole ridge) became little metallic ants.
The scree is brutal on the knees, but the effort is well worth it with stunning views down Glen Coe, over the Rannoch Moor and of mountains all around.
We all stopped frequently to admire the scenery…and maybe occasionally to catch our breathe!
There are 4 tops to conquer – two of which are Munros (despite someone trying to bully us into believing otherwise!) and they are at either end of the ridge. It’s the northern summit Stob Dearg which is often referred to in its own right as The Buchaille. The cairn on the summit is perched right at the front. It’s impressive.
The climb lived up to expectations and we rounded the day off with dinner and a drink in the Clachaig Inn. Perfect.
