I had a very early start from Fort William to get to my meeting in Inverness. The meeting was very useful and productive. Even better was the fact it finished much earlier than I had anticipated. So I set off for Cairngorm and bagged myself another Munro. It’s a hard life I’ve chosen!
For all that Cairngorm is one of the giants among Munros it’s the easiest one I’ve climbed so far. The path basically follows the funicular railway and ski tows almost to the summit. The views over Loch Morlich and the surrounding Cairngorms are phenomenal.
I seem to remember reading that if you go up to the Ptarmigan Restaurant via the funicular you don’t get access to the hill – certainly there were unwelcome signs of “no access to terrace for walkers” and “walkers entrance this way” - and you had to buzz an intercom to access the facilities! Suggests payment would be involved. Anyway, I was self sufficient and continued up a path which was roped and had posts on both sides, and then when that finished, a line of cairns let me to the summit and the weather station just beyond.
On the descent four reindeer munched their way across my path. They were beautiful even if they were too busy eating to pose for me.
