A couple of weeks ago mum kept a snippet from the Press and Journal for me about a vintage lorry rally in Oban. Now I love old cars and trucks and would have been interested in this just for that. What made this particularly pertinent is that the parade is in memory of a local businessman Tommy Owens who did a lot for local charities as well as founding Oban Express haulage firm. And I’m now living in his house! He ran his business from here for many years and was still living here when he died suddenly. The business is now run by his daughters and son. It was one of his daughter’s that I dealt with in buying this place. My neighbour told me that since she moved in to Soroba in 1972, she’s always thought of my place as Tommy’s house and even though he’s been gone 2 years, she still keeps referring to it as Tommy’s house. Old habits die hard, and I feel I’m involved in an exciting bit of local history.
