Today we took the ferry from the Sound of Barra to the Isle of Eriskay – famous for the wrecking of the SS Politician in 1941 when the locals went to “rescue” the whisky cargo – we drove on to South Uist, through Benbecula and on to North Uist. All connected by causeway. All very different islands yet with a lot in common: stunningly beautiful, with white sands. The birdlife is amazing. We drove on to the machir at a couple of points and saw (without leaving the car) shelducks, dunlins, cormorants, a hen harrier female, shovellers and corn buntings…to name but a few.
Our last ferry of the day (and of our holiday) was from Lochmaddy to Uig on Skye. Again a pleasant crossing with lots of birdlife to watch enroute.
We had our “last supper” and spent the night in the Ferry Inn before heading back to “auld clathes and purridge”
