I woke up to a glorious day and went for a jog. As soon as you leave the village (we were staying in Northbay) the roadside verges were a mass of orchids and clover – cream and purple – and poppies and thistles and buttercups. And it was the same throughout the island. Our first drive out was anti-clockwise (west) and we headed for Eilogarry (to look at Chille Bharra a graveyard and chapel) and the airport. It was amazing to watch the plane land on the sand! The flights are timed to fit in with the tides! It’s the only beach runway in the world providing a scheduled air service. The runway beach – as you can see from the photo – is beautiful white sand – as are many of the other beaches on Barra.
We did a complete circuit of the island (and went on to Vatersay – an island connected to Barra by causeway) by car and stopped in Castlebay for some messages. And we were home in time for lunch: the main road in Barra is only a half marathon long (about 13 miles!)
I spent the afternoon cycling round Barra in a clockwise direction which was great fun, stopping at other beaches.
As the weather was stunningly warm and bright and breezy, I went out walking after tea and climbed the highest point on the island: Ben Heaval a mere 390 metres high overlooking Castlebay and Kismul Castle. About 2/3 of the way up to the summit is a white marble statue of Madonna and child (not the pop star!) What views they enjoy from there.
