Today we set off driving in an easterly direction (clockwise) round the island and we stopped at Eilogarry where I walked for about 6 miles around the coast. More stunning views, more white sand, iron age dun and as this was on the machir the flowers were beautiful: a huge number of orchids again and the greenery of a huge number of primroses (flowers long since past) was still visible. And once again the bog cotton blew in the breeze.
We had some heavy showers in the late afternoon we I took the car into Castlebay to watch some of the Fisherman’s Mass - a blessing of the fleet and a wee boat race – all on a Sunday – with drinking and a ceilidh – so while Barra is predominantly a Catholic community it seems that Sabbatarianism is not as strict as in years gone past.
