Mum and I set off for Barra on the Oban - Castlebay ferry on Friday just after lunch. The crossing was nearly 5 hours but it actually past very quickly as the scenery and birdlife was captivating. The route takes you past Mull, the Ardnamurchan peninsula (where I clocked the lighthouse which I will be abseiling down for Macmillan Cancer in early August – yikes! I’ve never abseiled before) then out into The Minch which has a reputation for choppiness – but not today. You also pass the other islands of Muck, Eigg, Rum, Coll and Tiree - all waving to me to come and visit!
My binoculars were pinned to my face for most of the trip: gannets galore – with skuas in hot pursuit of anything the gannets had caught to eat, puffins, petrels and terns.
