Sunday 4th May 2008:The Waverley

I was up with the dawn chorus and cycled down to the north pier in Oban to catch the Sunrise Cruise on the Paddle Steamer Waverley. What a stunning sight. It really was taking a step back into a bygone time with the sounds and smells of the funnels and horns and bells, gleaming brass and varnished timber decks and seating. We sailed up Loch Linnhe through the Corran narrows and steamed into Fort William where I hadn’t been for, oh at least, 18 hours! For what is such a regular journey for me it was lovely to see familiar sights from an unfamiliar perspective: Connel and Balahuilish bridges, Port Appin, Ardgour and Ben Nevis. Observing the A82 road rather than concentrating on the route.
I saw a gannet and heard my first cuckoo of the year.
I was back in Oban in time to run the ABCD 10km race from the hospital: a fabulous undulating route – through and over Glenshallach. But then it’s hard to find anything other than undulating round Oban
