Sunday 18th May 2008: Creag Meagaidh circuit

I was up and off at the crack of dawn and had my first Munro of the day summitted by ten o’clock! This was Cairn Liath. The walk up was through young birch trees and heather clad hillside. A cuckoo accompanied me much of the way. The views from the ridge were spectacular over to Creag Meagaidh (and for miles beyond). From Cairn Liath the walk continues undulating over several smaller summits before reaching the next Munro: Stob Poitre Coire Ardair. Then there’s a steep descent and ascent over a very narrow snow clad bealach called The Window. This takes you on to the shoulder of Creag Meagaidh itself. There was even a snow shower while I was on the summit of Creag Meagaidh.
To paraphrase Muriel Grey the only difficult thing about Creag Meagaidh is spelling it. Well, she walked up The Window not down it!
Coming down via the Window had my legs shuggling and adrenaline rushing through me! It would always have been a steep descent – made more so with the snow still there. I feel my pictures don’t do justice to the gradient! Fortunately the snow was soft and my crampons saved the day. Thank you, Crampons. Another stonking day. Munro count now 75!
