One of the beauties of finishing work at 1500 hours is the lovely long evenings I have to do things. On Thursday after work I popped up to Fort William to pick mum up. Mum spent Friday pottering in the house and admiring the view from the decking, and on Saturday we went exploring. We drove to Lochgilphead via Seil Island- the Bridge over the Atlantic - Crinan ( to see the old Clyde Puffer VIC 32) and Tayvallich: places we used to go regularly to camp, places I hadn’t been to for 40 years. Enroute to Tayvallich we were talking about the heronry there and our expectation of seeing lots of herons: not a one in sight, anywhere. At one point however I stopped the car as a tall, slim, brownish bird with very long legs and a long neck was standing at the side of the road. “That looks like a stork” I said “Well I don’t thing a stork will be leaving any packages for you or me” quipped mum. Infact when I checked my bird book it was a juvenile crane! A rare visitor according to my book.
Even with our detours we still past through Kilmartin Glen which has an amazing array of standing stones, stone circles, cists and burial cairns – a linear cemetery it’s called. Well worth a look.
