Back in September we set out to walk the Glensax horseshoe and we were rained off. Today the weather was much kinder: still a very cold biting wind and cloudy but with hints of blue sky and dry. We were the first car to park at the end of Springhill Road where a signpost declares the way: "Public Footpath by Gipsy Glen to Yarrow". After crossing the Haystoun Burn the path begins to climb steadily to the open hillside high above Peebles.
Until you get to the half way point of the horseshoe, the path follows the old drove road. Some of the dry stane dykes which used to mark the route are still in place. I love following old drove roads. I feel like I’m connecting with history!
The summit of Dun Rig is the high point of the walk. The views are stunning in all directions. There was not another person in sight: I felt we were in really remote parts. This really is a brilliant high level ridge walk. Throughout the walk Mo pointed out landmarks: Minch Moor, the Eildons, Forests of Ettrick and Elibank, Mo’s house in Peebles!
We were conscious of the limited daylight remaining so we decided to keep the summit of Preston Law (the nipple!) for another day. Instead we headed down to a pine wood for a wee break before hitting the Bridge Inn for a half of Thrappledouser: the perfect end to a brilliant day’s hill walking.
