Thursday 25th October 2007: Six degrees of separation

A friend of a friend was having her first book “Hox” published and I went down to the launch at Prestonpans library. The launch was really well attended and lots of copies of Hox were sold – and signed by Annemarie, the author.

A woman started chatting to me. We talked about how we knew Annemarie, why we were in Edinburgh. As we were both from the West coast we chatted about whether we would go back and I mentioned about having landed a job in Oban. She asked where I was working just now. When I said, she then asked if I knew “so-in-so”. I manage her. Panic! I’ve not said anything at work about having a new job. “So-in-so” is also one of this woman’s best friends. Of all the people at the launch, how did I mange to talk to the one person who knew someone from my work? I wonder how long it will take for word to seep through?

As part of the launch the Prestonpans librarian read us a story – the first chapter of Hox. Annemarie later introduced us as “sister librarians”. When I got home my copy of Library and Information Update had arrived. I flicked through it and here's a picture and story about Erica, the librarian, in it. Another one of these quirky little episodes!
