Sunday 28th October 2007:

I spent Friday evening and most of Saturday sorting through all my worldly possessions which have finally caught up with me in Scotland. As much as I really appreciated BC and the removal firm doing all my packing for me, this meant I didn’t know where anything was. Nor had I managed to throw out items which I really didn’t need. Hence the need to spend precious “walking time” indoors rather than out in the wilds.
I managed a very short walk on Saturday afternoon from the top car park in Glen Nevis to the Steall Falls. This has to be one of the most beautiful half miles in the world. It’s up through a steep sided gorge, River Ness below, through tress, and the views are amazing. Then suddenly you’re in this huge open space facing the Steall Falls. I always feel like Ingrid Bergman in “Inn of the Sixth Happiness” when I get through the gorge.
Not that the weather was inclement but I did a double take as a man dressed in a wet suit ran past me as I approached the top of the glen.

Having spent so much time inside on Saturday I was looking forward to a good stomp up the hills. I set out for Ben Dubhcraig and Ben Oss. The walk in was beautiful - through the remnants of the ancient Caledonian Pine Forest and up the side the river. The views across Strathfillan were breathtaking (not least because of the height one was gaining all the time). Then the weather closed in as I approached the summit of Ben Dubhcraig. And the hail and the wind started. Discretion being the better part of valour, I left Ben Oss for another day.
