Today was an Edinburgh public holiday. Government offices were closed and I had to take the day off so I set off for Inverness to see an exhibition of Press and Journal photographs of the Highlands. Grand photos. My favourite was a farmer leading his sheep across the Kyle of Durness to their summer grazing.
En route I stopped at the House of Bruar (a real quality watering hole: everything for anyone with money, a luxurious place to shop) and walked up the gorge to the Falls of Bruar, a series of Water Falls. A beautiful walk through Scots Pines, Larch, Spruce and Beech trees.
I also visited Culloden Battlefield: quite a haunting location, bleak even on a sunny day. It must have been about 40 years since I last walked round the battlefield. Poignant.
Continuing this Jacobite theme I stopped at Killiecrankie on the way home and walked to the Soldier’s Leap – Donald McBane jumped about 18 feet across the river to freedom following the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689, the start of the first Jacobite rising. As I text my Brother "I couldn't do it" His reply "try harder next time!"
And the piece de resistance on leaving the Pass was for a Red Squirrel to run across my path! What a bute! My first sighting since I came back to Scotland - infact, the only time I can remeber seeing a Red Squirrel was on the Isle of Wight. Seeing them in Scotland is rare.
