Scotland Rocks

Two friends and I went along to hear Prof Iain Stewart talk about Scotland’s geology. A fascinating speaker who motivates and inspires with his own motivation, inspiration and knowledge. He made lots of interesting comments such as when he is on TV he is there to entertain not to educate. He says that rocks are portals to the past. They are lens to look through at the past. Stone built Scotland and stone worked for a living. In fact geology underpins all that we do in Scotland. And yet, we will lose our Geopark status for Shetland and Assynt (Lochaber’s staus has already been lost) because of lack of investment. This lack of investment is also evident in the fact that the last time a teacher of geology graduated in Scotland was 1985. Only 4 schools teaching a Higher geology in Scotland this year.
