Meg and I spent a wonderful week on the Isle of Coll. The ferry out was amazing for birdlife never mind when we actually got onto Coll. Everyday we went looking for Corncrakes…and everyday we saw this usually elusive bird.
The list of birds we saw is a mile long – ok, I exaggerate just a little, half a mile long. On one of our walks we were listening to the lapwings and the warblers and the gulls, and suddenly the song changed to squawking. A white tailed eagle had turned up and while it is the largest bird of prey in the UK, the smaller birds were not going to give him his own way. He was beaten off by the acrobatic lapwing and the dive bombing gull. A spectacular sight.
