Well, the road signs tell it as it is. Part of Applecross's attraction lies in its remoteness and in passing through some of the most spectacular scenery in Scotland and the fact that you don’t meet many L-drivers en route! The Bealach na Ba – the pass of the cattle – rises to to 2053ft in height from sea level in about five miles on one of the most challenging drives in UK – twisty, tight hairpin switchbacks, singletrack and mountainous.
(The Bealach na Ba is also the longest, toughest road climb you can attempt on a bike anywhere in the UK. Someday, someday…)
The summit was shrouded in thick mist so no views for me. ( nor had the cloud lifted on Saturday afternoon when I tried again from the other direction)
Still Applecross is well worth a visit – in particular the post office which sells Crabbies Cloudy Ginger Beer. Delicious especially after a jaunt up some Torridon mountains. The lady behind the counter asked if I realised the ginger beer was non-alcoholic. They had ordered them by mistake!
