Tuesday 30th Aug – Tuesday 6th September 2011

While I regularly tell everyone that life here is one big holiday – even though I do go into work (and work hard!) – I also do take annual leave. And I particularly like having time off late August and early in September. This is because during all my years in education I wasn’t able to take leave at this moment as student enrolment was one of the busiest times of the academic year.
I spent the first couple of days with mum as she had an unstable angina episode. The doctor stabilised her and I went up to spend the night. With company and reassurance she was back on an even keel.
D and my first outing was to the island of Kerrera – a 2 minute ferry trip from Oban. We took the long way round to the tea house (D could have strangled me I think but a welcome cup of tea won the day) and the parrot sanctuary. While the parrot sanctuary is closed while it upgrades facilities to seek zoo status, many of the parrots were still visible and audible and happy to wolf whistle as we past!
For a wee treat we had dinner at Coast one of my favourite watering holes in Oban on Saturday and on Sunday friends from Edinburgh had a night in Oban en route to Loch Arkaig. Great dinner and catch-up with them too.
On Monday we took a drive up Glen Lonan to Taynuilt and Robin’s Nest tea shop.
Family duties called us on Tuesday and Meg and I dropped D in Kinlochleven while we went on to The Fort to see mum.
Meg by this time was nearly back to normal: while I was out on Sunday Meg managed to get into the new bag of feed I’d bought her and ate and ate and ate so by the time I came in this wee round barrel waddled up to greet me!
