Having the afternoon off, again, D and Meg and I set out for Easdale Island – a 3 minute ferry ride from Ellenabeich on Seil Island. No cars no raods no street lights. Only about 700 metres across in any direction. And it’s the home of the world stone skimming championships which take place in one of the flooded quarries.
Easdale was originally famous as one of the slate islands – the islands that roofed the world.
There is a great museum on Easdale which officially was closed till 28th March but as one of the volunteers was working outside and fell in love with Meg, he opened the museum for us. Fascinating to see the days gone bye in relation to quarrying and slate making industries.
I climbed to the highest point on the island – a dolerite as opposed to Dolomite, similarly shaped minus the height! Views over to the Garvellachs, Fladda, Lunga, Belnahua and Scarba are impressive – as is the rugged south end of Mull.
Why the title? Well, To get to Easdale you need to go on to Seil Island which had a bridge over the Atlantic to connect it to the mainland over 200 years before the Skye Bridge was built.
