There are more than a hundred ancient monuments within a six-mile radius of the village of Kilmartin – standing stones, burial cairns, rock art, forts, duns and carved stones so meeting at Lady Glassary Wood and walking to the Temple Wood in time to witness the sun rise – on the winter Solstice with a full moon and a total lunar eclipse –was a must do.
And the fact that this was the first winter solstice lunar eclipse for 400 years made it a wee bit special too.
This was a walk organised by staff from the Kilmartin Museum so there was lots of useful chat on the ancient monuments of Kilmartin Glen.
The walk continued up what’s known as the linear cemetery to the Museum where breakfast was on offer, and although I don’t often turn down food, I wanted to get home to finish decorating a Christmas cake I’d made, so I jogged back to the car. What a great morning. What a great cake.
