Saturday 4th Dec 2010: All aboard the Balamory Express

Earlier on in the autumn the Oban Times ran a story about the closure of the Isle of Mull small gauge railway as Torosay Castle (where the railway runs to) was up for sale. So, when they ran a second story about a Farewell Trip on the Mull Railway D and I just had to go on it.
And as it involved taking the Mull ferry from Oban it had a real wee adventurous feel. And the thought of Calmac chips on the ferry kept our enthusiasm up. Calmac chips are a must.
It’s a short walk from ferry terminal on Mull to Craignure train station.
And then 1.25 miles of beautiful scenery on the Balamory Express to Torosay. With snow all around on the mainland the views to Bens Nevis and Cruachan – and the Glencoe mountains were spectacular, as was looking over the Sound of Mull and the Morvern hills. Never mind Duart Bay peeking through the Torosay woodlands. Bliss. Torosay is a beautiful Scottish baronial style castle with magnificent gardens.
We traveled on both steam and diesel trains and stopped enroute to take on water – the trains, not us. We were dressed like Michelin women to withstand the icy blasts of winter air. We even managed to have a picnic in the gardens of Torosay Castle. And posing for photos on the Italian Terrace was poignant as had the castle not gone up for sale we were going to have our Civil Partnership there.
