Friday 23rd April 2010: Mulling over the first cuckoo of spring

I know spring is well and truly underway when I hear my first cuckoo of the year, which I did this time on Mull on 23rd April: much later than those in England who write to The Times claiming the honour. Not only did I hear the cuckoo, I also saw it: Meg and I were having a morning walk on the beach near Bunessan on Mull, before D, Meg and I headed for Iona for the day. While there were many coach loads of tourists on Iona, we saw next very few as we headed for the north beaches where we had the sands to ourselves. Bliss
