Having finished my meeting in Inverness I headed further north to Ullapool: wanted another crack at some Munros, and hoped (with having taken Tuesday off as leave) I’d get two attempts at them. Quick change of plan for today as I battled to open my car door: the wind was fierce. Nice sunny spells between the horizontal hail showers: Walked instead to the Bone Caves near Inchnadamph: fascinating walk up the river to the four caves in a mountainside where I took refuse during a particularly heavy hail storm. Fortunately no lemming, lynx or arctic fox around today! Great wee walk. Dried off in the car up to Inverkirkaig. Got such a welcome from the man in the bookshop I asked if I was his first customer of the day (now 1640 hours) yes, I was. On from there by foot to the Falls of Kirkaig. Another great wee walk along another river to a fabulous waterfall.
I had intended to camp in Ullapool but neither of the sites were yet open, so I booked into a motel for the night – complete with WIFI! Bliss. Obviously only needed internet access to check the mountain weather forecast service: window of opportunity very slight for the morning: could probably manage a Corbett (next series down from Munros). Fortified with vegan fry up I just got to the summit of Beinn Enaiglair as the blizzard swept in! Good old GPS to the rescue for the downward leg. Views from the bottom made the summit look quite benign by the time I was having lunch at the lochside – welcomed back by a flock of Jacobs’ sheep, a pony and a Shetland pony!
