Sunday 6th July 08: Kilmartin Glen

On the way home after Osprey spotting I stopped off in Kilmartin glen to walk along the “linear cemetery” – a row of chambered cairns that stretch along the floor of the glen. Human habitation here dates back over 5000 years – before the building of the pyramids and the building of Stonehenge. As well as chambered cairns there are standing stones and henges. The walk goes along an old coach road and through many deciduous trees – beech, sycamore, lime and ash. At the far end is Carnasserie Castle – a 16th century tower and hall house high on a ridge above the Kilmartin glen.
