Sunday 16th March 2008: Lochan Caorainn

I often have to slow down and stop to let sheep wander across the road, but today I had to stop to let the herd of deer cross the road as I was going down Glen Etive. My walk started with a secluded forest track of about 2 miles before hitting open hillside. Once again there were lots of erractics along the way.
I actually set off this morning to claim another Munro: Sgor na h-Ulaidh and ended up doing a walk to Lochan Caorainn which was well worth the detour: a beautiful frozen lochan with stunning views – including Beinn Fhionnlaidh which I did yesterday from the next glen.
My attempt on Sgor na h-Ulaidh was brought to a halt with thigh deep wet granulated sugar which is how the snow felt. Knee high snow I found manageable but not thigh deep snow on a very steep incline. Sgor na h-Ulaidh will keep for another day.
