Friday 9th – Monday 12 November 2007: The Old Smiddy Kinlochewe

A very quick turn around at mum’s and off we headed for Kinlochewe. We had the Old Smiddy cottage booked for the weekend. Perfect for two people: comfy, compact and an old worldly feeling about the decor. Two things in particular attracted it to me: a multifuel fire and the fact it was 20 yards from the shop so it was easy for mum. And it was a good gateway for driving all over Wester Ross and excellent for walking. The view out of our back windows was Slioch.

On Saturday we took the scenic route to Ullapool – via Gairloch, Gruinard Bay, Corrie Shalloch Gorge and Poolewe. We past Red Deer, buzzards and a peregrine falcon just crusing around. Ullapool was looking as beautiful as ever. One shock to the system was paying 109.9p for a litre of diesel! I know diesel is cheaper further south, but the scenery here makes up for the cost once the initial stupefaction has worn off.
