Sunday 19th August 2007: The Eildon Hills

A text message just as I was leaving the house told me that there would only be 2 of us on the AD walk. Was I still game? Is the pope a catholic! I met with Mo at Melrose Abbey and we then drove to our destination (Dryburgh Abbey) to leave a car there.
We started our walk by paying 30 pence for the loo!!! Day light robbery – hugely more expensive than even the loos in the Kyle of Lochalsh. While the walk becomes undulating the first stretch really gets the blood pumping as there is a steep hill, made steeper, I think by having stairs to climb (too muddy not to have steps). The view is brilliant back over Melrose and surrounding villages and towns. We detoured from the basic route to walk up one of the Eildon Hills: photo above, and behind my right shoulder is our ultimate destination.
The walk was a delightful combination of height, open spaces with the heather blooming, woodland with rich beech avenues and beautiful architecture – houses in picturesque villages, bridges wooden and suspension and the ruins of both Melrose and Dryburgh Abbeys. A brilliant day out. Topped off with a look at the Melrose Rugby Sevens and a drink in a local hotel.
