Friday 29th June 2007: Once in a Very Blue Moon

The taxi arrived at 0515 hours to get to me to the airport for my 0655 flight to Stornoway. As this was the first day of the Edinburgh trades’ fortnight the airport was hoaching. Fortunately the flight was quiet only 13 passengers. This augured well I hoped for the numbers of people I was likely to encounter on Lewis and Harris and I’m delighted to report the space and solitude was all that I had hopped for. Anyway, I’m getting ahead of myself.
As there was only 1 member of cabin crew when she did the H+S procedures she had to talk each aspect through on the intercom and then say “and now I’ll demonstrate it”
We arrived at Stornoway airport in blazing sun and this set the scene for the weekend. Fortunately amongst all the thermal clothing and waterproofs I’d brought, I had packed one tee shirt which I washed each night for the following day.
Having picked up the hire Ka I headed south for Harris. The first walk I did was a linear walk to Loch Voshimid (seemingly where J.M. Barrie got some of his inspiration for 'Mary Rose'. Then I drove on to Huishinis to the beach and did a circular walk there. Both walks were stunning. The scenery up here tries all the time to upstage itself with something else beautiful just round the corner.
I had booked myself into the Harris Hotel and having dined despite being very tired I went out for another walk. It was just too nice to stay in doors.
I was however too tired to stay awake to drive to Callanish to see the blue moon – something that won’t happen again until 2025.
