Friday 15th June – Sunday 17th June 2007: Help! So many exhibitions

No trouble but Help! Was an exhibition Maggi and I went to in The Queen Mother Building at the University of Dundee. The University of Dundee had re-discovered a collection of Beatles photos (about 500 in all) in their Michael Peto archive (about 130, 000 in all).
There were over 40 black and white pictures in the exhibition all “behind the scene” shots in the filming of Help! Unfortunately the University were waiting on replacement brochures so we didn’t get the full story of each of the photos. Some I’m sure must have been shot on Salisbury plains – mainly because of the military overtones. Looked very strange seeing John Lennon with a rifle in his hands. There were also shots of them eating, relaxing, at home, in the studio. It really was a trip down memory…never mind Penny Lane.

Sunday continued our culture vulture activities with a visit to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery to see the Naked Portrait. A brilliant collection of drawings, paintings, sculptures and photographs covering 1906-2006. They were groups in themes which was a great way to see the development in different approaches. Well worth seeing.

We then went on to a small exhibition – Modern Print Masters -in the Dundas Street Gallery which was only exhibiting for a week. When I walked in I thought, I know this man and it clicked that I’d just read an article about him in the Scots Magazine and how he had transformed the old Watermill in Aberfeldy into a great space for art – with café, bookshop etc. He had taken this exhibition space for the week to drum up business for the Watermill. Must visit there soon. Saw two paintings which I’d really like to buy…Kate Downie’s Salmon Boat and Neil Canning’s Voyage II.
