Saturday 14 April 2007: Over the Sea to Skye via palindrome

I try at least once a year to take the Glen Elg ferry over to Skye. The ferry is a manually operated turntable ferry which takes a maximum of six cars. It's the last turntable ferry operating in Europe - and the crews maintain it's the last operating in the world.
The ferry operates between Glenelg and Kylerhea which is the shortest crossing between the mainland and the island. The crossing used to form part of the Old Drovers Road - the taking of cattle from Skye to the mainland markets.
Getting to Glenelg involves driving over the Mam Rattigan pass - stunning views over Loch Duich and the Five Sisters' of Kintail (more Munro mountains and on my list to do). Following the first Jacobite rebellion military barracks were built at Glenelg - the Bernera Barracks - and you can still see the ruins.
The palindrome: GlenelG
