Thursday 15th December 2011: St Conan’s Kirk, Loch Awe

As we had some free time before our tour in the Hollow Mountain we visited St Conan's Kirk magnificent, stark, and just a wee bit bizarre. Walter Campbell who designed the Kirk took ideas from different places and time periods so there is an eccentric mix of styles.
There is a miniature cloister – The Cloister Garth. And there is the Bruce chapel with a larger than life effigy of Robert the Bruce – wooden with an alabaster face and hands, which with the way the light hits it gives translucence.
Below the effigy is a small chamber containing a bone of Robert the Bruce, brought from Dunfermline Abbey.
The Chancel and the stalls in the Chancel are amazing, as are the dolphin chairs and the carved owls.
