Mum and I have an annual pilgrimage: we drive to Skye for the day via the Glen Elg – Kylerhea ferry, the Glenahuilish, which is the last manually operated turntable ferry in Scotland. 4 cars can get on the ferry comfortably if we all breathe out. 2 collies owned by the skipper herd everyone up on both sides of the crossing. While we were there they barked incessantly at the two seals which were keeping us company.
I always have a real sense of adventure going to Skye this way as it involves a drive up and over one the highest passes – the Mam Ratagan. The summit is at about 1100 feet and one negotiates several hairpin bends on a single track road. The views over the Five Sisters of Kintail (mountains of course) and Loch Duich are awe inspiring.
