Auchindrain is an old farming village where groups of families worked the land in common. It’s now a museum with the buildings furnished and / or equipped and gives a glimpse of live and work in bye-gone days.
There were other events on in Auchindrain today which D and I wanted to see – sheep shearing done the old fashioned way, waulking the tweed, dyeing materials with wild flowers and spinning. Spoke to lots of interesting women about these old crafts.
While I took lots of photos D did some walking of the tweed – this means beating the material in a slow rhythmically way against a table in time to slow Gaelic songs. This softens the material. As the cloth is waulked, it is moved to the left to work it all through. Fascinating to watch and hear.
