Saturday 23rd Feb 08: Severe weather warning!

When I woke up and looked out of the window I could see only as far as the marina: the very choppy looking marina. No view of the castle – and it’s only a few hundred metres away. It was the windiest and wettest I’ve seen since I came back to Scotland! So no mountain walking for me today. Instead I did the next best things to walking on mountains I saw photographs of mountains and listened to people speaking about them. I went to the Fort William Mountain Festival to see two exhibitions and to hear a lecture on The Modern Face of Everest. One exhibition was entitled “mountain life and culture” and included paintings from local school children. The other exhibition was portraits of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team. The photographer had been rescued by the team and taking their pictures was a way of working through the trauma.
The lecture on Everest concentrated on the ethics (and practicalities) of helping climbers (or not) who get into difficulty in the death zone. Very thought provoking. The pictures Matt Dickinson used (and footage from the 1975 Chris Bonnington expedition) were awe inspiring. I will get my trip planned…
