Sunday 1st July 2007: Standing Stones of Callanis

My first walk of the day was part of the Harris Walkway and followed part of the Old Postal Road between Stornoway and Tarbert through the foothills of the Cliseam (799 metres). Only took me about 45 mins each way over lush green and sometimes boggy terrain.
I then wound my way up to Callanish I II and III where I had a picnic lunch overlooking the standing stones of Callanish I. This is the biggest set of stones – about 50 in all. (Callanish II has about 5 stones still standing, and Callanish III about 20 stones.) The energy around the stones is amazing.
As is the case throughout Harris and Lewis nothing* is open on Sundays – not even the visitors’ centre here which would have done a roaring trade. The Sabbath is well observed.
What was amazing about all my walking was that I had to watch where I was putting my feet – the wild orchids and other grasses and plants were everywhere – and I have the pictures to prove it!
* the only place I found open was one fuel station in Stornoway close to the airport which was obviously The Place to Be on Sundays – everybody seemed to be hanging out there
My flight back to Edinburgh was delayed a little and the security was very visible at both Stornoway and Edinburgh airports.
